Our love has been the thread through the labyrinth, the net under the high-wire walker, the only real thing in this strange life of mine that I could ever trust.

Did you know that whenever you fill in one of these tests, you’re helping digitize a book?
There was a great Nova ScienceNow segment on Luis von Ahn, a young computer prodigy who has invented some pretty cool stuff. See the image above? I just knew it before as the authentification system for buying a movie, a book, or any number of things online. Turns out this system, Recaptcha, in addition to being an anti-spam tool (bots trolling online can’t decipher the distorted words in the images) is also a text digitization aide. As researches and programs scan books online, many of the words aren’t recognized by a computer’s OCR, and so come out confusing the computer.  Think of an old manuscript that is being scanned where all the characters that look like “f’s” are really “s’s,” or strange Old English words, or just poetic license with spelling, and so-on. As you type in words to verify that you’re a user, you’re also helping Recaptcha identify words and digitize books and other texts. Nova claims that more than 20 years of archived New York Times has been digitized with the help of Recaptcha in less than a few months.
Luis von Ahn has devoted his career to creative solutions like this that harness the work-power and work-time of millions of users, worldwide. Click here to find out more!

I just heard about this last night! So cool!!

If you give a Pat some peanuts

  • Pat: buy me a beer
  • Dave: no way
  • noooooooooo way
  • never
  • ever
  • Pat: well then buy peanuts for me
  • Dave: that'd be even worse
  • Pat: why?
  • Dave: many reasons
  • 1) I think that peanuts are more expensive than a beer
  • 2) I then have to watch you eat peanuts
  • 3) I then have to listen to you eat peanuts
  • 4) You will create a mess
  • 4a) That mess will embarrass the rest of us
  • 4b) Someone will slip on those shells, and hurt themselves
  • 4bi) That person will be a guy that was just about to give us a bunch of free hats
  • 5) You won't shut up about how great the peanuts were for the rest of the night
  • 6) Eating the peanuts will make you thirsty, and then you'll just bug me for a beer anyways
  • that's it

I’d like to see a computer generated picture of what this Michael Jackson would have looked like at 50.

Internet, can you help me?

As a last ditch effort to score tongiht, I will stand in the middle of the bar and yell, “THIS FACE WON’T SUCK ITSELF!” and see what that brings in. It’s a solid plan. My future is bright.

I think it sounds solid. (via micek)

I just spit out a sip of my drink onto my computer screen.  No making me laugh when I’m drinking - thems the rules.
