beets? hmm. they make me think of doug funnie but i’m curious what’s a good way to eat them b/c they also make me nervous. any good recipes floating around out there???According to Dr. Jonny Bowen, author of “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth,” we should be eating:
- Beets
- Cabbage*
- Swiss chard
- Cinnamon*
- Pomegranate juice
- Dried plums*
- Pumpkin seeds*
- Sardines
- Turmeric
- Frozen blueberries*
- Canned pumpkin
I regularly eat all the starred foods. I’m excited to eat more beets now that they’re almost in season. Last summer I ate them at least once a week: in a tangy mustard dressing, in a cold borscht, and shredded to make pancakes. But apparently, they pack the most punch when eaten raw — all the more reason to wait for the very freshest to appear at the green market.
I’m surprised to find sardines on this list. Dr. Bowden calls them “health food in a can.’’ Yum! Sardines mashed with mustard on toast. Like the idea of that.
Finally, I find it very odd that Dr. Bowen recommends prunes (dried plums) because they are “packed with cancer-fighting antioxidants” but then suggests eating them “wrapped in prosciutto and baked.” Seems like the pork fat and mondo-salt might defeat the purpose.
